After being released from prison, Lang returned to his hometown in northwestern China. As a member of a dog patrol tasked with cleaning up stray dogs before the 2008 Olympics, he forms a bond with a black homeless man. The two lonely souls embark on a new journey together. Eddie Peng [the main character] developed such a strong bond with Sin, the dog in the film, that he adopted him after filming was over. I had no idea what to expect when I watched this movie. It was slow but utterly fascinating. It’s set in a bit of a dark environment, but it really opened my eyes to how people live in some parts of China. It’s a harsh, barren, treeless existence, yet the city is gearing up for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. with propaganda blaring from loudspeakers in the style of true Communist China. Although it is a serious film, there are a few parts that are quite funny and although it is not dialogue heavy, what is NOT said makes you think. I understand it won at Cannes.
