David Kaplan: Bathroom
Line of Events
Mismatched cousins reunite for a trip through Poland in honor of their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a twist when the odd couple’s old tensions surface against the backdrop of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother in Poland, the place is Jesse Eisenberg’s; their real-life ancestors settled in the diaspora. Benji Kaplan: We keep moving, we stay light, we stay agile. Benji Kaplan: He comes after the train, he starts walking to the front looking for David Kaplan: Excuse me, are we walkers? Benji Kaplan: Yeah.
This is our country
By the time he gets to the front, the train is in the station and we’re home free. David Kaplan: That’s so stupid. The tickets probably cost about twelve dollars. Benji Kaplan: That’s the principle. We shouldn’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland. David Kaplan: No, it’s not, it was our country.

They kicked us out because they thought we were cheap. I think the only reason I went to see this movie was because of Kieran Culkin. What can I say, I love Succession. And I certainly got more than I initially expected. It’s clear that this movie was written from the heart, and Jesse Eisenberg’s script is certainly strong, with great dialogue and constantly changing interpretations of the phrase ‘Real Pain.’ Benji and David have very compelling arcs and the other characters, while not three-dimensional, are given plenty of time to shine, especially James. As for the direction, Jesse Eisenberg does a good job in his debut.
Both actors do a great job, especially Culkin
The film is well shot and while there isn’t a lot of variety, it evokes a simple but realistic tone. Eisenberg tackles a strong subject and I think he does it well. I’m impressed with some of the things he was able to film on location, which makes the emotions even more intense. But of course the strongest aspect of this film is the performances and the dynamic between Eisenberg and Culkin. Benji’s character is truly fascinating throughout the film, as the audience constantly sees the consequences of his grief and David’s reactions to them further strengthen their bond. Even though they are cousins in this film, they really feel like brothers reuniting.
Check it out if you can
Overall, I had a great time with this film. I doubt it will blow anyone away and it doesn’t have any moments of extreme catharsis, but what it does, it does very well.
